WhySpace?

I must admit, although I have been a MySpace member for over a year, I very rarely visit the site, much less participate. Recently, I was inspired to dust off my login and visit MySpace. I started off doing a search for people that graduated my year in college and then moved to see how many high school alums I could find. Considering my graduating class in high school was just over 20 people, I was surprised to see how many people I knew were getting themselves involved with MySpace.

In my travels I came across the profiles of many kids that had graduated from my high school in much more recent years. I was very surprised to see how they used the site as opposed to how the old folks were using it. It is clear that the younger generation uses the site as a form of regular communication with their peers, much like email or IM, while the Internet geriatrics seem to use their profile as a way to give life updates.

Whit that said, whenever I head home to visit my rents, I inevitably run into various childhood acquaintances that I haven't seen for decades. Perhaps the next time this happens, as opposed to enduring the 10+ minutes of painfully awkward exchange of life stories, I will just say hi and ask the person if they want to trade MySpace profiles. That way, we can get all the info we need without the drawn out conversation. Maybe we could even cancel the reunions moving forward. Just create a big index of your classmates MySpace pages, everyone can stay home and peruse profiles and have a few drinks in the comfort of their own home. So many embarrassing moments could be avoided and you can even private message the people you do keep in touch with to talk about other people behind their virtual backs.

This may seem a little weird and reclusive, but I guarantee that the first MySpace Class Reunion is not far off, if it hasn't been done already.
